Polyester Lining Fabric for Formal Garments: What Should You Check?

Formal garments require attention to the inside as well as the outer appearance. A suitable polyester lining fabric can contribute to the garment's comfort, movement and finish, but the choice should follow the construction and outer material rather than a universal rule. Different lining weights and weaves create different results.

For example, Taffeta (190T) ranges from 52–65 GSM and has a lightweight, smooth and non-bulky finish. Satin ranges from 67–80 GSM, offering a smooth, glossy surface and good drape. Satin dobby is available from 72–82 GSM and has a textured satin base with a richer hand. Jacquard ranges from 80–85 GSM and features a woven surface pattern. These differences give manufacturers several characteristics to compare.

When selecting lining for a formal garment, consider the outer fabric's weight, weave and care routine. Then assess the desired inner finish, lining weight and construction. A lighter option may help maintain a slim profile, while a more substantial fabric may add body. The lining's surface can also influence how the garment feels during wear. For tailored production, sewing and pressing behaviour should be tested rather than assumed from the specification sheet.

A sample made with the actual outer fabric provides a more useful assessment than GSM alone. Check the garment's hang, movement, seams, wrinkles, shade and pressing response before ordering in quantity. Double Ghoda supplies 100% polyester lining in four weaves, ranging from 52–85 GSM, in 45-metre rolls. Black, navy, white and off-white are top-selling colours, while the overall range includes 50+ shades. This gives manufacturers options to evaluate according to their specific garment requirements.
